Ohlins 36mm and 46mm MacPherson Strut

A MacPherson strut version of the Öhlins monotube range, these dampers are equally as versatile in hardware and adjustment configurations. The struts utilise an "inverted insert" arrangement, whereby a gas-pressurised monotube insert damper runs inverted in an external case, mounted within Teflon bushes. This offers a number of key benefits over conventional MacPherson strut arrangements:

  • The 40mm steel cylinders used for the inserts have considerably more rigidity and strength than an 18-25mm steel rod as found in most conventional struts.
     
  • The shaft is mounted to the base of the outer case and fully enclosed within the case. This keeps the oil seals protected from external dirt and moisture and prolongs the service life of the insert damper.
     
  • The insert mounts radially inside the outer case between a pair of Teflon coated bushes. These provide minimal friction (even under high lateral loadings, a major short-coming of conventional MacPherson struts), and because the piston inside the insert is also mounted between the 2 bushes lateral deflection of the damper is minimal. Compared to a conventional setup this results in a much stiffer strut, with less lateral deflection, lower operating friction, and subsequently higher durability.
     
  • An inverted design allows for the use of a smaller diameter shaft (without sacrificing strength), giving more internal piston area for improved damping performance and consistency, and less shaft displacement thus smaller increases in operating gas pressure.
     
  • More of the struts weight is located at the end which mounts to the vehicle chassis, and thus unsprung weight is reduced.
     

Öhlins MacPherson struts are available in many of the same configurations as the monotube damper range. 36mm piston versions are primarily used, with 46mm versions used for heavy duty use, such as rally dampers. The 46mm product has now been discontinued and replaced by the new generation Ohlins Rally and Off-Road product (see TPX44 + TTX44 product page).

Adjustment is available in single, 2-way and 3-way adjustable forms. Single adjustable dampers run with an internal gas reservoir and adjustment operates primarily in rebound via a shaft bleed. The adjuster is mounted at the bottom of the strut. 2-way and 3-way configurations utilise the same rebound adjustment, but with the addition of a hose mounted external reservoir, with a variety of mounting options to suit specific applications. 2-way adjustment features a single compression adjuster mounted on the external reservoir, whilst 3-way offers independent low speed and high speed compression adjustment on the external reservoir. The MacPherson struts utilise the same temperature correction in their adjusters as the monotube dampers, giving ultra consistent damping performance.

Many of the MacPherson strut monotube applications that we cater for are custom built, allowing us to accomodate specific customer and vehicle requirements at the point of sale, such as custom valving, or alterations to hardware specifications. Dampers are valved based on the specific purposes of the vehicle and we can take into account whether the car is used for road, trackdays, or racing, the vehicles weight, the type of tyres that it primarily runs on, etc. It also allows us to build dampers for just about any application on the market, in addition to the wide range of existing damper specifications that we already have.
